Types of Social Media

WIKI e.g.  wikipedia.org

  • Software that runs a website that allows users to collaboratively create and edit web pages using their web browser
  • Good for organising Events
  • Also good for information on places, people etc. as everyone can contribute
  • Not the most reliable source of information
BLOG e.g. blogspot.com

  • Read, write or edit a shared online 'journal' as such which the public can see or particular people only
  • Telling the world about an interest or topic that other readers can look at and share and discuss about a particular thing
  • Anyone looking to share interests etc.
MICROBLOGGING e.g. microblogging.com

  • Slightly different from a 'traditional' blog as its contents is usually much less
  • Sharing things with the world but very quickly - sort of like twitter
  • Good for people to quickly share things that have little spare time
RSS FEED e.g.  most news websites have one

  • Really Simple Syndication; is a family of web feed formats that is used to publish regularly updated works i.e. News
  • Feed used by people that follow many different social networking sites i.e. Facebook, Twitter, MySpace
  • Also used by people who need to keep up with News for some reason - makes it quick and easy
